ABOUT US
St. Joseph Vineyard is a family run boutique winery nestled amid the rolling hills of the Grand River Valley. At. St.
Joseph, we believe that all great wines begin in the vineyard where the influences of cultivar, soil conditions, weather
vitricultural and cellar practices are reflected in each vintage by what the French call terroir. Our family has been
growing wine grapes in Ohio since 1972. In 1986 we planted our latest vinifera (French/European) grape vineyard
within the Grand River Appellation to benefit from the unique microclimate the region provides
Throughout the year, you will observe family and friends out in the fields tending to the early stages of the wine
making process including pruning, shoot positioning, thinning, hedging and other viticultural practices.
We believe that all great wines begin in the vineyard where the influences of cultivar, soil conditions, weather,
viticultural and cellar practices are reflected in each vintage in what the French call terroir.
Starting with hand picked grapes to ensure fruit quality, our wines are produced in small quantities using traditional techniques. Our goal is to produce interesting wines
which express the character, complexity and intensity of the vintage. ABOUT THE VINEYARD
St. Joseph Vineyard is located in a unique micro climate in the Grand River Valley Appellation which benefits from
both the proximity to a large body of water and its moderating effects and elevation which promotes good air and
water drainage. With the longest growing season in the region, the grapes ripen to perfection during warm sunny days and cool breezy nights.
The vineyard is planted on a 2 to 6 degree slope, which provides natural drainage in a North/South orientation for
maximum exposure to the sun. The vines are spaced 9 X 6 and trained on either single wire double cordon or double
wire trellis systems with Vertical shoot positioning. The soil is permeable sandy loam based on Loudenville and
Lordstown sedimentary deposits left by the last glacier. The rocky soil helps encourage drainage and radiates stored
heat. Spur pruning is generally practiced since it allows even bud distribution on the wire. Crop loading is limited to two tons per acre to allow proper ripening.
We utilize cultural practices including shoot and cluster thinning shoot positioning and leaf removal to maximize the
fruit's exposure to the sun and the production of colors, flavors and phenolic compounds. We try to base our harvest according to pH, grape suppleness and flavor rather than sugar level.
ABOUT THE WINES Our wines are produced from selected grapes which we hand pick then ferment using the latest technology blended
with proven traditional techniques. Our goal is to create interesting wines that express the character, complexity,
vitality and intensity of each vintage. Our size allows us personalized attention to our vines, our wines and to our customers. Currently we produce award winning
wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Chardonay, Vidal Blanc, Riesling, Ice Wine, Pinot Noir, Reserve Pinot Noir, Merlot and Shiraz. AN INVITATION
