Summer 2018 Events

At Pinot Vista

May 26th, - Alex Bevan - 3-6PM, Northern Ohio's low tech troubadour with breathtaking lyriscapes of flawless guitar playing and compellingly conversational voice.

June 1st,- Second Annual "Pinot QUEST" to commence this Summer
, Fourteen estate wineries that grow and produce award winning Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Chardonnay announce the second annual Pinot Quest (formerly the Pinot Trail). Participating wineries include: Debonne' Vineyards, Ferrante Winery, Grand River Cellars, Harpersfield Winery, Kosicek Vineyard, Laleure Vineyard, Laurello Vineyards, Laurentia Vineyards, M Cellars, Maple Ridge, Marko vineyard, St. Joseph Vineyard, Silver Crest Cellar, South River Vineyard.

The event sponsored by the Tri-County Grape Growers Association allows Pinot enthusiasts to sample and compare the fine wines produced in the Grand River Valley Region which is part of the "Pinot Belt", a geographic and climatic set of conditions within the northern hemisphere that growers have identified as a latitude where Pinots can flourish.   Historically these regions comprise a belt of smaller unique places in cooler climates such as Burgundy France, Oregon's Willamette Valley and the Grand River Valley Region of Ohio.

Pinot wine lovers don't need to travel to Europe or to the far west to sample great Pinots.  They are being grown and produced right here in the Pinot Belt along the shores of Lake Erie in the Grand River Valley Region.

Why are Pinots so popular among wine enthusiasts? Well this excerpt from the film Sideways may help:
Miles Raymond :" it's a hard grape to grow, as you know. Right? It's uh, it's thin-skinned, temperamental, ripens early. It's, you know, it's not a survivor like Cabernet, which can just grow anywhere and uh, thrive even when it's neglected. No, Pinot needs constant care and attention. You know? And in fact, it can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked away corners of the world. And, and only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. Only somebody who really takes the time to understand Pinot's potential can then coax it into its fullest expression. Then, I mean, oh its flavors, they're just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and... ancient on the planet".

Come and enjoy the elusive, sought after holy grail of wines- The Pinots.  Coined the "femme fatale" of wines by pinot aficionados.

Wine lovers can join the Great Pinot Quest event by purchasing a serialized trail card for $30 or $25 for OGIC VIP members at any of the participating wineries.  Each card holder will receive 2 tastes of a pinot wine at each of the wineries.  The Pinot Quest event runs through the month of June however, customers are welcome to visit the wineries throughout the year.   Customers are also invited to attend a number of special events scheduled at some of the participating wineries which will be posted on each winery's website.  Those who visited all 14 wineries will receive a gift when they turn in their card.

St. Joseph Vineyard is a  family run boutique Ohio winery nestled  amid the rolling hills of the Grand River Valley.  At. St. Joseph, we believe that all great wines begin in the vineyard where the influences of cultivar, soil conditions, weather vitricultural and cellar practices are reflected in each vintage by what the French call terroir.  Our family has been growing wine grapes in Ohio since 1972.  In 1986 we planted our latest vinifera (French/European) grape vineyard within the Grand River Appellation to benefit from the unique microclimate the region provides

Throughout the year, you will observe family and friends out in the fields tending to the early stages of the wine making process including pruning, shoot positioning, thinning, hedging and other viticultural practices.

We believe that all great wines begin in the vineyard where the influences of cultivar, soil conditions, weather, viticultural and cellar practices are reflected in each vintage in what the French call terroir.

Starting with hand picked grapes to ensure fruit quality, our wines are produced in small quantities using traditional techniques. Our goal is to produce interesting wines which express the character, complexity and intensity of the vintage.

Entrance located on Rt 307 (Warner Rd) 2 Miles East of Rt 528 just West of  intersection of Rt 307 and County Line Rd.  The hours are 1-7PM on Fridays and Saturdays. The new tasting room is situated on 60 acres of rolling hills and vineyards overlooking the beautiful Grand River Valley.  An attached deck provides a spectacular scenic view of the surrounding vineyards and valley.  "The stucco exterior gives the building a Tuscan appearance." suggests tasting room manager Cristina.  Inside, a unique plank floor constructed of a variety of local hardwoods is a feature which invokes conversation about its origin and history.  Wines featured are those grown on the estate vineyard and include Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling.  Cheese plates are available and visitors are encouraged to picnic.

St. Joseph Vineyard is located in a unique micro climate in the Grand River Valley Appellation which benefits from both the proximity to a large body of water and its moderating effects and elevation which promotes good air and water drainage. With the longest growing season in the region, the grapes ripen to perfection during warm sunny days and cool breezy nights.

The vineyard is planted on a 2 to 6 degree slope, which provides natural drainage in a North/South orientation for maximum exposure to the sun. The vines are spaced 9 X 6 and trained on either single wire double cordon or double wire trellis systems with Vertical shoot positioning. The soil is permeable sandy loam based on Loudenville and Lordstown sedimentary deposits left by the last glacier. The rocky soil helps encourage drainage and radiates stored heat. Spur pruning is generally practiced since it allows even bud distribution on the wire. Crop loading is limited to two tons per acre to allow proper ripening.

We utilize cultural practices including shoot and cluster thinning shoot positioning and leaf removal to maximize the fruit's exposure to the sun and the production of colors, flavors and phenolic compounds. We try to base our harvest according to pH, grape suppleness and flavor rather than sugar level.

Our wines are produced from selected grapes which we hand pick then ferment using the latest technology blended with proven traditional techniques.  Our goal is to create interesting wines that express the character, complexity, vitality and intensity of each vintage.  Our size allows us personalized attention to our vines, our wines and to our customers.  Currently we produce award winning wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Chardonay, Vidal Blanc, Riesling, Ice Wine, Pinot Noir, Reserve Pinot Noir, Merlot and Shiraz.

If you are near Cleveland, Ohio and want a unique wine tasting experience, a weekend visit  brings you face to face with the wine growers and wine makers that make Ohio wineries successful. Come taste the Ohio wines that have received international recognition  and are produced in one of the finest wine regions of the New World but in the same style of the Old World.  A quiet setting where friends meet to talk and enjoy the premium
